Hoesch Sheet Piling: Sealing the Deal for Environmental Cleanups

When an area becomes contaminated, the primary objective is to gain control of the site by sealing off what has been contaminated from spreading any further. This objective can easily be accomplished with the use of a hoesch sheet pile. By itself, a steel sheet piling is impermeable to hazardous materials. Any possibility of seepage is limited to where two pieces of sheet piling join together. Incorporating the use of a sealing system, such as the Hoesch interlocking sealant system, would be highly beneficial in maximizing impermeability of the steel piling.

The Hoesch sealant system is a highly effective sealant system composed of an elastic polyurethane. Remaining elastic even after application, the polyurethane facilitates a “self-sealing” process which takes place over time. Polyurethane material used in this sealant system is resistant to weather, aging, saltwater, mineral oils as well as many acids making the Hoesch sealant system an ideal choice for the task of sealing steel sheet pilings.

The Hoesch interlock sealing system is comprised of two different seals, one factory-
fitted for either side of the steel. One side receives the section of steel, while the other side is to be driven into an already set piece of steel piling. Each interlock, driving and threading, get their name from the purpose the serve. Preventing the formation of rust underneath the seal of each interlock, along with ensuring optimal adhesion is of utmost importance. Both of which are the responsibility of an appropriate primer treatment.

Before the construction of sealed sheet piling is initiated, it is advantageous to differentiate between which edges of the piling are threading interlocks and which are driving interlocks. When setting each piece of piling, the interlocks must be lined up accordingly creating a doubly secure sealing system. Developing a driving plan is essential for continuously driving sealed piles. A driving plan assists with organization so that driving interlocks can be placed into the bevelled and threaded interlocks maximizing efficiency.

Think of this like hanging up Christmas lights. The most efficient plan would be to layout all strands of lights. Next, place a “male” connection, from the first strand of lights, closest to the location of the extension cord. Lastly, add additional strands as necessary. If placed in the opposite direction, the male end (required to plug into an extension cord or wall socket) will be on the side furthest from an electrical socket needing the services of additional extension cords.

Incorporating the use of any form of interlocking sealant system for a steel sheet piling project is always a must to avoid any potential seepage. Eliminating any possible threat of seepage is the primary task for a Hoesch interlocking sealant system, no matter what the project consists of. Seepage is not only limited to preventing the spread of hazardous materials.

Although, combining the forces of a superb sealant system and steel sheet pilings makes for a truly impermeable defense system against possible contaminants such as any variety of hazardous materials.
